Abstract
Introduction: Sunlight can stimulate skin pigmentation and skin aging. Therefore, using sunscreen can protect skin from UV. However, many studies reported that chemical sunscreens interfered with hormone function, caused allergic reactions to the skin and may promote skin cancer. Sesame oil has many biological activities, but lack of sufficient scientific information that can protect skin from UV radiation and prevent water evaporation. The objective of the study is to study the properties of sesame oil for sunlight protection and prevention of skin water loss. Methods: Antioxidant property of sesame oil was investigated using DPPH and ABTS scavenging assay. The prevention of water evaporation of sesame oil was determined as occlusive factor. The sun protection property was determined as sun protection factor (SPF). Results: The EC50 of sesame oil was 97.41 ± 10.68 mg/ml and TEAC 0.0010 mM Trolox/g sesame oil. Sesame oil can decrease water evaporation and protect sunlight. The investigation of the SPF value of the sesame oil was in the range of 5.29 + 0.23. Conclusions: Results from this study indicated that sesame oil had potential to use in cosmetics.
