Abstract

    In order to characterize the antityrosinase and antioxidant activities of Bauhinia malabarica or Somsiaw, the vegetable and medicinal plant ofthe northeastern region of Thailand. In the present study, the dried leaves were extracted with 90% methanol. Seven compounds, 6,8-di-C-methyl kaempferol 3-methyl ether, kaempferol, kaemferol-3-O--rhamnoside, quercetin, quercetin-3-O--glucoside, quercetin-3-O--rhamnoside and quercetin-3-O--galactoside, were isolated by chromatographic techniques.Their structures were determined on basis of spectroscopic methods. The isolated compounds exhibited both tyrosinase inhibitory activity and antioxidant by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay. Quercetin showed the highest activities for antityrosinase and antioxidant activities at IC50 0.10 mM and 0.19 mM, respectively. It is suggesting that B. malabarica could be regarded as a potential source of natural antityrosinase and antioxidant agents.
